Surah Al-An'am, Ayah 42 (6:42)

ٱلْأَنْعَام

وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَٰهُم بِٱلْبَأْسَآءِ وَٱلضَّرَّآءِ لَعَلَّهُمْ …

Quran 6:42 is ayah 42 of Surah Al-An'am (“The Cattle”), a Meccan surah of 165 ayahs. It is in Juz 7, on page 132 of the Madani Mushaf.

وَلَقَدْأَرْسَلْنَآإِلَىٰٓأُمَمٍمِّنقَبْلِكَفَأَخَذْنَٰهُمبِٱلْبَأْسَآءِوَٱلضَّرَّآءِلَعَلَّهُمْيَتَضَرَّعُونَ٤٢
walaqad arsalnā ilā umamin min qablika fa-akhadhnāhum bil-basāi wal-ḍarāi laʿallahum yataḍarraʿūna

And We have already sent [messengers] to nations before you, [O Muḥammad]; then We seized them with poverty and hardship that perhaps they might humble themselves [to Us].(42)
